As the Netflix agency I created grew from Singapore and Malaysia to take on the Hong Kong and Taiwan markets, I started a Friday afternoon tradition, where each community manager would “present” the week’s trending topics from their home countries, and tell us what it was like growing up there - the fun nostalgic quirks from school, the stuff they watched on TV every Saturday morning, etc. Quite a few of the scripts I wrote were born during those discussions, as I tied their insights to launches of shows and products across APAC. HK culture was always so fascinating, and the best performing videos made almost no sense to the social team in America (which was a great thing, really!). This video created a huge wave in the HK market, ahead of the launch of Stranger Things, and almost didn’t get approved by the US for being so out there. I still chuckle to think about it now. Stranger Things is all about the mid 80s, so when I asked the HK team what they remembered about that time, it was all about children’s TV and how wonderfully bonkers it was. I asked which presenter they loved the most from this time - and we managed to bring her out of retirement for this video. We created a blend between the show she presented in the 80s and 90s, and the Stranger Things set. The HK show was known for singing a lot of songs, so - for the first and last time - I composed a song with a Cantonese DJ and we used AI to make it all fit together. I think this was one of my favourite shoots to creatively direct and would happily do it all over again.
