A result of working for in-house agencies and small independent houses is that, well, we’re rarely allowed to enter awards. I am frightfully un-decorated! I look at CDs who are 10 years younger than me and sitting on an iron throne made of plaques and trophies but, alas, my best work is trapped inside white label contracts and NDAs. I probably could go to jail for this website - what a badass! I digress - this Orange Is The New Black campaign went down so fondly with the actual makers of Orange is The New Black that Netflix gave us special permission and it won quite a few gongs. Woohoo! This concept started out as myself designing an entire OITNB set on a prison food tray - using tiny little figurines as the characters (remember when cooking tiny little eggs in tiny little kitchens were a thing on social?). However, when I engaged The Smalls (I was their client for this project, in my role as MD for Netflix Asia’s social agency) and discovered a duo in the Slovenian mountains who made enchanting female puppets that beautifully resembled real bodies, with the thread used to visualise emotional connections between characters, I was completely sold on bringing my script to life with their majestic work. Phew, long sentence there. The team at Finta had never worked with a brand before, and it was a unique experience to be the CD working between a demanding brand and art grant funded puppeteers. I was proud to have been able to deliver the ambitious project while ensuring everyone involved felt valued and inspired - and it was this project that led to myself leaving Netflix and creating The Smalls creative department in London.
